Fareham College recently invested further in new technology to support the teaching and learning of Level 3, 4 and 5 students at our CEMAST campus in Lee-on-the-Solent.
The state-of-the-art microscope, VHX-970F series manufactured by Keyence (UK) Ltd, has been installed on-site and offers students across a wide range of subject areas, including Mechanical, Manufacturing and Aeronautical Engineering, the ability to view and picture items up to 200X magnification. The computer monitor and software enable 3D profiles and depth measurement pictures accurate to 5.52 microns; 1 micron is one-millionth of a metre.
Students will use this new technology to investigate materials, fracture surface and indentation depth on a variety of samples, in addition to learning about the impact of tension testing, using this data to inform material property assessments, among many other uses. The microscope, which can be used as a freestanding item or handheld for versatility, also features a range of additional facilities, including backlighting and glass stands to aid observations on such a small scale.
In addition to the freestanding and portable microscope, the technology also comes equipped with industry-standard software and a 25-inch 4K computer capable of displaying live images in exceptionally high resolution. Through this software, staff can directly stream onto any clever touch monitor located throughout the CEMAST campus, offering an engaging and highly-interactive learning environment.
Fareham College is committed to investing in the learning environment for our students through the introduction of new technology and larger-scale projects. One such development is the Institute of Technology, working in partnership with Solent University and the University of Portsmouth and four other FE Colleges. Construction of this £2.5m extension at CEMAST will commence later this year, with completion scheduled for 2023. Stay tuned for more updates!
